Frequently Asked Questions

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to <majordomo@killercomputing.com> with the following command in the body of your email message:

    unsubscribe houston

or from another account, besides your@email.address:

    unsubscribe houston your@email.address

If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list,(if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the list itself) send email to <owner-houston@killercomputing.com> .This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need to contact a human.

We have started a Mailing List for the Houston Area Magicians.  The list is to allow easy communication between the area magicians that have access to email.

In case you have never been part of a mailing list before, I will attempt to explain what a list is and how you use it.

A mailing list is made up of a list of people that are all interested in the same subject, or interest.  Many of you that have email are familiar with copying a single mail message to many people at the same time.

There are a couple of problems with this.  First of all the person sending the mail has probably setup an 'alias' that contains all the entries.  If they haven't, then every time you want to send a piece of mail to their 'list of friends', they have to remember who was on the list.  This is a problem, because when I do that I usually forget a couple of names.  The next problem is that if another person wants to send a piece of mail to the same list, that person has to create an 'alias' as well.  Before you know it, you have a number of people each with a different version of the list, and none of the lists are quite the same as any of the others.

This is where the Mailing List comes in.  With the Mailing List, there is just one address to send mail.  The people on the list have the ability to unsubscribe themselves if/when they are no longer interested.  No one really has to remember who is on the list.  Just send a message to the list and all the people that want the message will receive it.

There are some other features of a Mailing List.  You can find out who is on the list, but only if you are a member of the list.

The Houston Area List has just a few rules:

1. The topics discussed here should be of the following types:

            Magic Activities

            Magic in general:

                        Sleights

                        Ideas

                        Questions

                        ...

            Announcements for the following:

Upcoming Events that concern the Club

                        Who is working where

                        Possible Bookings

                        ...

2. Commercial messages are not allowed.

That is pretty much it for the rules.  If things get out of hand, more rules may need to be enforced.  I really don't want to enforce anymore.  Seems the more restrictive a thing is the less people use it.

The next question is "How do I use the list?"

The answer is pretty simple.  Pick you favorite mail client and send a piece of mail to the following address:

            houston@houstonmagic.com

If you are not sure whether or not you are subscribed to the list, the list will tell you.  Your message will be bounced back to you if you are not subscribed.

In case you need to subscribe to the Houston Area Magicians Mailing List, do the following:

            1. Use the address "houston-request@houstonmagic.com"

            2. Put the following in the body of the message

                        subscribe houston your@email.address

If for some reason you no longer wish to receive mail from the list do the following:

            1. Use the address "houston-request@houstonmagic.com"

            2. Put the following in the body of the message

                        unsubscribe houston

There are number of things you commands that you can send the Mailing List. These commands can show you who is on the list, what your current setting are, and a number of other things.  To find out what commands you can send to the list.  Do the following:

            1. Use the address "houston-request@houstonmagic.com"

            2. Put the following in the body of the message

                        help

There may be some time when you need to talk to the list administrator. The address to use is:

            "houston-owner@houstonmagic.com"

The address directly above is directed to Scott Wells.

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.
